What is the formula for determining the weight of a fish based on its size? The
rule of thumb for fish weights of various body types are:

Generalized formula for calculating the weight of fish is as follows:
(girth X girth X length) divided by 800

BASS - Weight Calculation Formulas
Length² x Girth ÷ 1,200 = weight
(length x length x girth ÷ 1,200) = weight

You can also use:
(length X length X length) divided by 1600

BLUEGILL - Weight Calculation Formula
(length X length X length) divided by 1200

PIKE - Weight Calculation Formula
Length³ ÷ 3,500 = weight
(length x length x length ÷ 3,500) = weight

TROUT and SALMON- Weight Calculation Formula
Length x Girth² ÷ 800 = weight
(length x girth x girth ÷ 800) = weight

WALLEYE - Weight Calculation Formula
Length³ ÷ 2,700 = weight
(length x length x length ÷ 2,700) = weight

CATCH & RELEASE TIPS

1. Play fish quickly. Avoid netting if possible.
2. Handle carefully, avoid stress to eyes, fins, gills, and protective body slime.
3. Remove hooks with pliers. Cut line if gill-hooked or swallowed.
4. Measure fish, photograph and release as quickly as possible.
5. Use the fish measurements and formulas here to find out the fishes weight.
