SOUTHERN REGION - EAGLE VALLEY RESERVOIR - Rainbow trout are providing anglers with fishing opportunities at this small reservoir 3 1/2 hours from Las Vegas. NDOW has stocked the fishery with catchable fish. Summer temperatures will cause fishing to slow as the fish go deep during the daytime to escape the warm temperatures. Early morning and late evening are the most productive times to fish.
ECHO CANYON RESERVOIR - PowerBait or a combination of mini marshmallows and worms should work for rainbow trout. Look for pockets of cover in deep water that provide the fish with shade during the day.
LAKE MEAD - A pair of seven-pound striped bass were reeled in during a fishing tournament held over Father’s Day weekend. One of the fish slammed a lure despite having a 14-inch striper in its throat. This hungry fish and several others were caught in the Overton Arm near Echo Bay. The area from Vegas Bay to Boxcar Cove continues to produce stripers and catfish, and the Boulder Beach area is giving up a few fish as well. Reports of top-water action have been coming in for the past couple of weeks. Stripers have also been hitting live shad and anchovies.
LAKE MOHAVE - Shore and boat anglers are catching stocked rainbows with PowerBait, spinners and flies at Willow Beach. The fish are averaging 12 inches in length though fish to 15 inches or longer are caught periodically. The National Park Service is constructing a new fishing pier so trout are being stocked near the kayak launch for the time being. Striper fishing has been slow. Stripers are still bending rods for anglers fishing out of Cottonwood Cove. Those fishing from shore are using prepared bait fished in the early morning and late evening hours. Boaters are catching fish to six pounds while trolling just outside of coves and along the cliffs in Cottonwood Basin. Largemouth bass are still hitting baits. A five- pound bucket mouth took big-fish honors during a weekend tournament. The winning weight was 14 pounds.
LAUGHLIN - No Report.
WAYNE E. KIRCH WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA - The most recent word from Kirch is anglers are finding very good fishing for stocked rainbows and for largemouth bass. Bucket mouths have been hitting spinnerbaits and plastics while trout are taking PowerBait and spinners.
URBAN PONDS - The Nevada Department of Wildlife recently stocked catfish in each of the five urban ponds: Floyd Lamb Park, Lorenzi Park, Sunset Park, Veterans Memorial Park in Boulder City and Hafen Park in Mesquite. Bluegill are taking mealworms fished on the bottom at Floyd Lamb Park. Despite the heat, anglers are still catching a few rainbow trout as well. NORTHEASTERN REGION - ANGEL LAKE - The road to the lake is now open, though there is still a lot of snow at the lake and ice on about 50% of the lake. Fishing continues to be good using worms and small. Fly rodders should try prince nymphs, PT nymphs, small wooly buggers and copper johns. Wear warm clothing and good boots to stay warm and dry in the snow. Most anglers are fishing from the dam.
CAVE LAKE - Fishing here is fair to good depending upon the day and the weather. Small spinners, worms and PowerBait are all working. Average fish size is 10-12 inches. This is a great place to camp and take the kids fishing.
COMINS LAKE - Trout fishing has been poor here due to the illegal introduction of pike which have decimated the trout and bass fishing here. Due to this, NDOW is currently not stocking Comins with trout.
ILLIPAH - Fishing has been good with most anglers using worms, spinners or minnow type lures. The average fish is 10 to 14 inches with an occasional trout pushing 16.
JAKE'S / BOISE RESERVOIR - The water is clear and fishing is fair. The water level is already starting to drop a bit. Carry-over fish are in the 10 to 12 inch size with the occasional 14 fish being caught. A few bass are starting to show up.
JIGGS / ZUNINO RESERVOIR - Garden hackle and spinners have been working here. Fly rodders have had some success with olive and brown marabou damsel patterns. Anglers are being asked to keep the fish they catch up to the legal limit, as this water has been getting low in the late summer and most of the trout may not survive.
MOUNTAIN STREAMS & LAKES - Many of the streams are still flowing heavily, but they appear to be clear in most areas. Tabor Creek has good flows for fishing and it is running clear. Lamoille Creek is running high for fishing, as are most of the creeks in the Ruby Mountains. However, on some of the warm afternoons, the fishing should start to pick up at the beaver ponds in the upper meadows. The trails to the Alpine lakes are still snow covered with no access. It will probably be July before most of these lakes are accessible. Owyhee River below Wildhorse Dam is producing some small trout using spinners. The South Fork River below the reservoir is fishing well.
RUBY LAKE NWR - Sunday, June 15, is the opener for boats powered by oar or electric motor. Fishing at the boat ramp has been poor. The ditch down by the Bressman Cabin has produced a few fish and the oxbow behind the hatchery has as well. The springs are fishing poorly. However, as the weather warms up and stabilizes, fishing should start to pick up. Expect some pretty good bass fishing in August, once the water warms up after 3 good water years in a row.
SOUTH FORK RESERVOIR - Fishing continues to be fair to good on the west side of the lake from Coyote Cove north along Jet Ski Beach. Shore anglers are doing as well as the boaters for trout on the west side using worms floated off of the bottom. Float the worms by inflating them or putting a small marshmallow on the hook with the worm. Orange and green PowerBait is also producing fish. Trollers are having the best luck fishing between 15 and 20 feet down using flashers, wedding rings and spinners. Some black bass are being caught, though it is a bit slower this year due to the cooler temperatures. The guard males are still on the nests, so give them a break and fish the structure for the bass that are not on nests. Trolling for wipers should be good. Flyrodders are producing fish with black wooly buggers with flash built into the body or tail. Leach, streamer and similarly large patterns in browns, bloods and olives in sizes 6 and 8 should work as well. Finally, no black bass may be taken here until July 1st. One wiper 15 inches or longer may be kept.
WILDHORSE RESERVOIR - Fishing has improved here and several anglers have reported some nice trout. Don Lininger and fishing party caught 30 trout on a recent trip here trolling a worm behind flashers. They ranged in size from 14 to 22 inches. Most of the fish were caught in the main body of the lake just south of the Hendricks arm. Other anglers have reported catching nice trout in this same area fishing a couple of hundred feet off of and trolling parallel to shore. Lininger also caught some perch just north of the state park, throwing worms out from shore into deep water and letting them settle on the bottom. So the perch are starting to show up now. No reports of any bass being taken, but they should start showing up in the creel. You may not keep any black bass until July 1, but you may keep one wiper 15 inches or larger.
WILSON RESERVOIR - The road is in good shape and fishing has been fair to good depending upon the weather. Trout fishing has been good using damsel fly patterns along the rocks and shorelines. Trollers have also done well using small spinners. Bass fishing continues to be good in the shallows along the willows for anglers using plastic gear or crankbaits. The lake continues to spill and fishing has been good below the falls using worms and spinners. NORTHWESTERN REGION - BILK CREEK RESERVOIR - Fishing pretty well, worms and power bait have been producing.
BIG SPRINGS RESERVOIR - Big Springs Reservoir continues to drop and will not receive fish until it starts to fill.
BOULDER RESERVOIR - Randy Lusetti, Western Region biologist, reports fisherman have been catching limits, with some in the 14 - 16 inch range.
CARSON RIVER - The river fishing should start picking up as the low drops 658 cfs as 6/12//08.
CATNIP RESERVOIR TRIBUTARIES AND OUTLET - Opens June 14, Should be great opener. More information available after opener.
CHIMNEY RESERVOIR - Perch have been on the bite. No reports on Walleye yet.
FORT CHURCHILL COOLING PONDS - Some bass being reported in the 12 - 14 inch rage. Try using rubber baits or weighted grubs.
HOBART RESERVOIR - The access to Hobart Lake via the Ash Canyon is fully accessible. Same report as last week. The anglers also reported several Tiger trout caught. Try using red midge patterns in size 12, also prince nymphs worked. The East shore seems to be the most productive.
LAHONTAN RESERVOIR - Currently, fishing has been excellent for white bass in the 9-12 inch range. Minnows are great bait if folks can come by them. Worms will pick up not only the white bass, but a few catfish and walleye, as well. Fishing for white bass has been good all around the lake, especially near the inlet of the Truckee Canal near the dam. Catfish action has slowed a little. Water levels have been stable but will start dropping as soon as the V-line Canal in Fallon is repaired. Over the summer, look for good fishing to follow the dropping reservoir from the Silver Springs beaches, into the narrows, and finally to the Lahontan Dam area.
LAKE TAHOE - Mackinaw has been on the bite in the morning hours and in the evening. J-Plugs in about 60 feet of water have been working well. As the day heats up try trolling in deeper water anywhere between 80 feet to 200 feet deep. The ski run Shelf is still producing fish and the run between Cave Rock and Zepher. Anglers have reported a good number of Fish in the 10 lb plus.
LIBERTY POND - Try your luck for channel cats this time of year due to the warmer temps. Try chicken livers for the best results.
MASON VALLEY WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA - Opened February 9, any hour of the day for the following waters: Bass, Crappie, North Bonds, Beaver Slough and that portion of the Walker River within the Mason Valley WMA. Hinkson Slough same season as above. Limit is two trout and 15 warm water game fish of which not more than two may be black bass. Minimum size for trout is 16 inches. Minimum size for black bass is 14 inches. Artificial lures only. Come March 1st, it will be unlawfull to possess black bass between 11 and 14 inches in length. Hinkson Slough is beginning to weed up. If you can find good open water the bass fishing should be good for the next couple of weeks. Your best luck for trout should be in the early morning hours.
MARLETTE LAKE - Closed.
PINE FOREST COMPLEX (Blue Lakes, Knott Creek, Onion) - Blue Lakes opens June 14. Road conditions still questionable, check for an update after the opener. Onion was de-watered last year. It will not be fishable this year. Anglers reported good fishing at Knott Creek opener. Most fly anglers were catching fish with crystal maroon woolly bugger or midge patterns under a strike indicator. Mohair Leach in blood red is another great pattern to try. The fishing should continue to be good until the water starts to heat up.
RYE PATCH - Same as last week. Tyler Turnipseed, Western Regional game warden, reports excellent fishing for wipers, worms and bait have been working the best for shore anglers. The boat anglers have had their greatest luck using white and chartreuse jigs. Fair walleye, fair crappie. Some spotted bass are showing up.
SPOONER LAKE - The shore line is beginning to weed up for best results try to get out into the lake with a canoe or float tube. No reports on success yet.
SQUAW CREEK RESERVOIR - Same as last week but slowing down a bit. Anglers are reporting full catches on Bass, Trout and Catfish.
TOPAZ LAKE and CANAL - Topaz Landing reported Topaz is fishing fair to slow. Anglers are reporting 3 to 4 fish a day in the 18 inch range. The north shore is still producing good catch rates.
TRUCKEE RIVER - Streamers are still the fly of choice as the flows have reduced and bait fish are moving from the high water holding areas. The Flow is currently as of 6/12/08 523 cfs. Spin tackle anglers try the Rapala’s and Cast Masters in gold and rainbow. Keep an eye on the flow as the warmer weather returns.
WALKER LAKE - The East walker is becoming a bit more fishable. The flow is now at 114 cfs this is good flow. But keep an eye on this one as irrigation season kick in higher flows will fluctuate. Try prince nymphs, gold ribbed hares ear, some stone fly action should be accruing.
EAST WALKER RIVER SPECIAL REGULATION WATERS - The river is too high to fish the USGS reports 177cfs as of 6/12/08.
WEST WALKER RIVER - It's time to try this sometimes under fished water.
WALL CANYON RESERVOIR - Game Warden Randy Lusetti reported some Small Mouth action in the shallows.
WASHOE COUNTY URBAN PONDS - All urban Ponds have been planted except Virginia Lake. Virginia Lake will not be planted this spring.
WASHOE LAKE - Washoe Lake dried in 2004 and, although it is presently full and has been restocked, the fish population, consisting mostly of channel catfish and white bass, is small. Fishing is expected to be poor.
